The ingredients needed to make Amla (Gooseberry) Chutney:
- Take 6-7 amla (gooseberry), boiled
- Take 3 tbsp. oil
- Take 2 dry red chilies
- Take 10-12 peppercorns
- Prepare 1 tsp. cumin seeds
- Prepare 2 tbsp. coriander seeds
- Prepare 1/2 tsp. fenugreek seeds
- Make ready 2 tbsp. fresh grated coconut
- Get 1 onion, chopped
- Make ready 1 " ginger, chopped
- Get 2-3 garlic cloves, chopped
- Take handful coriander leaves along with the roots
- Prepare 1-2 green chilies (opt)
- Take 2 tbsp. roasted peanuts
- Get to taste salt
- Take 1 sprig curry leaves
- Prepare 1 tsp. mustard seeds
- Take 1/4 tsp. asafoetida
- Get 1 tsp. urad dal
- Get as needed curry leaves, chopped amla & fresh chilies to garnish (opt)
Indian gooseberry is called as Amla in Hindi, nellikai in tamil and kannada and usirikaya in Telugu. During the season, amla are available fresh and cheap in the Indian markets. Amla is an immunity booster since it is high. If you dont want to use green chilies, substitute it with red chili powder.
Steps to make Amla (Gooseberry) Chutney:
- Heat 1 tbsp. oil in a pan and saute the coriander seeds, cumin seeds, pepper, red chilies, fenugreek for a few seconds on low flame till you get a nice aroma.

- Grind into a powder. Keep aside.
- Heat oil and saute the onion, ginger and garlic till light brown. Switch off the flame. add the coriander leaves, green chilies and peanuts.
- Grind into a paste and keep aside.
- Boil the amla (gooseberries) or pressure cook for 1-2 whistles….. And grind into a paste.
- In a bowl, mix together amla and onion paste along with the powdered spice.
- Heat oil in a pan and temper with the mustard seeds. Add the curry leaves, asafoetida and urad dal. Saute for a few seconds.
- Add the prepared paste and saute on low flame till the moisture dries up.
- Serve, garnished with curry leaves, chilies and chopped amla.
