The ingredients needed to make Amla (Gooseberry) Chutney:
- Prepare 6-7 amla (gooseberry), boiled
- Make ready 3 tbsp. oil
- Get 2 dry red chilies
- Make ready 10-12 peppercorns
- Get 1 tsp. cumin seeds
- Take 2 tbsp. coriander seeds
- Make ready 1/2 tsp. fenugreek seeds
- Get 2 tbsp. fresh grated coconut
- Make ready 1 onion, chopped
- Make ready 1 " ginger, chopped
- Take 2-3 garlic cloves, chopped
- Prepare handful coriander leaves along with the roots
- Get 1-2 green chilies (opt)
- Get 2 tbsp. roasted peanuts
- Make ready to taste salt
- Take 1 sprig curry leaves
- Make ready 1 tsp. mustard seeds
- Take 1/4 tsp. asafoetida
- Get 1 tsp. urad dal
- Get as needed curry leaves, chopped amla & fresh chilies to garnish (opt)
It is also known as usirikaya thokku pachadi. This recipe is from my mum who makes it often during karthika masam. Indian gooseberry is called as Amla in Hindi, nellikai in tamil and kannada and usirikaya in Telugu. During the season, amla are available fresh and cheap in the Indian markets.
Instructions to make Amla (Gooseberry) Chutney:
- Heat 1 tbsp. oil in a pan and saute the coriander seeds, cumin seeds, pepper, red chilies, fenugreek for a few seconds on low flame till you get a nice aroma.
- Add the sesame seeds, followed by the…..
- Coconut. saute till light brown. Cool and……
- Grind into a powder. Keep aside.
- Heat oil and saute the onion, ginger and garlic till light brown. Switch off the flame. add the coriander leaves, green chilies and peanuts.
- Grind into a paste and keep aside.
- Boil the amla (gooseberries) or pressure cook for 1-2 whistles….. And grind into a paste.
- In a bowl, mix together amla and onion paste along with the powdered spice.
- Heat oil in a pan and temper with the mustard seeds. Add the curry leaves, asafoetida and urad dal. Saute for a few seconds.
- Add the prepared paste and saute on low flame till the moisture dries up.
- Serve, garnished with curry leaves, chilies and chopped amla.
Amla is an immunity booster since it is high. If you dont want to use green chilies, substitute it with red chili powder.
