- Prepare 250 g Minced Beef
- Make ready Tomato Paste

Wonderful cottage pie reminds me of the meals I had in my British school's canteen. I followed the recipe for everything except the green peas coz I do not have them on hand. I use a bigger onion instead. I forgot to dot extra butter on top but it still came out crisp with adequately brown.
Instructions to make Cottage Pie:
- Cut the onion, and fry until translucent.
- Add the beef into the same pan, and fry until browned. Add a generous dash of Hendersons relish.
- Add in a squeeze of tomato paste and garlic paste. Combine the stock cube with 300ml of boiling water and add to the pan.
- Peel and slice up the carrots. Put then in a pan of boiling water for 6 mins. You can put them straight in if you like, but I find they are too hard in the final pie.
- Reduce down the liquid while the carrots are cooking. Add 200g of frozen peas. Add in the boiled carrots.
- Cover with pre prepared mash, grate on some cheese and put in an oven on 180C for 15 mins.
Cottage pie is actually older than shepherd's pie. Potatoes were affordable ingredients that were often used by the peasants, who lived in cottages. Why is it called cottage pie? It originated when the potato was being introduced as a cheap food for the poor, and the dish was popular among the people living in modest cottages.
