  1. Take Block ready pressed Tofu
  2. Prepare 2 tsp Chinese five spice

These crispy tofu puffs (tau pok) are delicious with the tofu puff skin inside out and stuff with filling. The outer skin still stayed very crispy even after being deep fried for an hour. You can treat this as a finger food or as a snack and normally it is served with a chilli dipping sauce. Drain the liquid from the Tofu and "press" the extra liquid out by wrapping it in a clean dish towel, or by using a Tofu press.

Steps to make Chinese Crispy Tofu:
  1. Drain and press the tofu for excess water, cut into strips and add salt, pepper and chilli flakes. In a hot pan or wok add oil and fry the tofu until crispy. Remove and leave to drain on a piece of kitchen paper.
  2. Wipe the wok, add a splash of oil and fry the onions, green pepper, mushrooms and Chinese five spice until soft. Add the Ginger, Garlic paste and tomato purée and cook for another couple of minutes. Add the soy, mirin and water and reduce to a lovely thick and sticky sauce. Season to taste.
  3. Add your crispy tofu to the sauce just to warm through as you don’t want to lose that crispy taste. Serve and enjoy.

Try to get it as dry as possible! Cut the Tofu into even cubes. Note: It sticks, and the crispy bits end up sticking to the pan, which is a tofu tragedy. Plus, it requires more oil, and you don't need to use a lot of oil to get crispy tofu. When you bake your tofu, you give it time to develop crispy edges and warm, pillowy insides.
