Test by pricking the cake with a skewer, if it comes out dry then the cake is done. Turn out onto a rack and allow to cool.
Add the cooled date mixture, then sift in the flour, baking powder, mixed spice and salt. Add the walnuts and stir together until thoroughly mixed.
